Overall:

The one-day workshop will give the participants a practical overview on how data visualization can be used both as a research tool and for communicating research objectives and results to audiences such as peers, grant committees and other decision makers, and the public.

The participants will also work on their own data visualization project using either their own data or data provided by the instructor, according to their own preference. Participants should bring their own laptops.

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant:

 – has basic understanding of how human visual perception works and how this should be taken into account when creating visual displays of data

– is familiar with the most common chart and map types, and is able to pick the most suitable type for a variety of use cases

– has practical experience in creating clear and compelling data visualizations using Microsoft Excel and/or other software tools.

Juuso Koponen has been a visiting lecturer in information design since 2008, first at University of Art and Design in Helsinki and then at Aalto University. He also provides bespoke training services for companies, public sector organizations and NGOs. In addition to teaching, Koponen is co-founder and information designer at the data visualization consultancy Koponen+Hildén. He is specialized in information design, data visualization, infographics, visual journalism, news graphics, maps, graphic design and typography.
